Confidence Can Be Your Superpower

Confidence is contagious. So is lack of confidence.
— Vince Lombardi

Let’s be honest — asking for money can feel uncomfortable. Even seasoned fundraisers sometimes hesitate before making the ask. What if the donor says no? What if they think we’re being pushy? What if we don’t have all the answers?

But here’s the truth:  confidence is not arrogance — it’s clarity. Confidence comes from knowing your mission matters, understanding your donor’s values, and being crystal clear about what you’re asking for and why.

When you show up with calm, grounded confidence, people feel it — and they want to say yes.

Reframe the ask

You’re not begging for money; you’re offering an opportunity to make an impact. Every time you invite someone to give, you’re giving them the chance to live out their values through your work. When you truly believe that, your energy shifts — and so does your success rate.

Know your story

Confidence comes from clarity. When you can tell a short, specific story about how your organization changes lives — and what difference one gift can make — you no longer have to “sell” anything. You’re simply sharing truth with conviction.

Prepare — then let go

Do your homework. Know your numbers. Practice your ask. But remember, perfection isn’t the goal — connection is. You don’t need to have every answer ready. You just need to believe in what you’re saying and show genuine curiosity about your donor’s perspective.

Stop apologizing

Watch your language — literally. Phrases like “I hate to ask,” “I know times are tough,” or “I understand if you can’t” weaken your message. Instead, try confident, invitational language:

“I’d love to invite you to be part of this important work.”
“Your support could help us serve 100 more families this year.”
“Would you consider a gift of $5,000 to make that possible?”

Practice fearless asking

Confidence grows with repetition. Ask for feedback. Celebrate every ask — not just the yeses.
Each conversation makes you stronger, more clear, and more comfortable standing in your power as a fundraiser.

In closing…

Your work is too important to play small. When you ask with confidence — not just for donations, but for what you need as a professional — you model courage for your colleagues, your donors, and your community. Confidence isn’t something you’re born with. It’s something you build — one fearless ask at a time.
